North West Areas Band Review

February 2012.

After many weeks, including ten rehearsals in 14 days, the band finally put some demons to rest as we performed at the North West Regional Championships at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Sunday. Having registered 15 new players in 6 months and with poor results at Bolsover and St Helens the band felt we had something to prove this week, and prove it we did!

It has been well documented how challenging the test piece Cross Patonce is for 2nd section bands but the band worked extremely hard to achieve a credible result at Blackpool. But more about that later.

On Sunday 19th February the band first performed the test piece in public at Boarshurt Band Club’s Area preview evening. We were then on our own turf at Dobcross Band Club for a similar style event on the Thursday evening, also featuring Dobcross Youth Band, Eccles Borough Band and Milnrow Band. Many thanks to the two adjudicators Russell Gray and Colin Hardy, who gave valuable constructive feedback to the bands on their performance. Both events proved worthwhile in putting us under pressure and getting rid of some nerves.

After a lunchtime rehearsal on Saturday many of the band made their way to Blackpool to set up camp for the weekend at The Albany guest house. And so arrived the Big Day. We had an early morning warm-up as we waited for the draw at 9am but ended up with a long wait on our hands as we drew last out of 14 bands. At around 2.30pm we were finally sat on the huge stage of the Winter Gardens Opera House ready for the one performance that counts. Well done to MD Kenny, the band and all the soloists on a fine performance which brought together weeks of hard work. In a strong, competitive section the band is proud to have been placed 8th overall, also securing their place in this division again next year.

The band is now looking to build on this performance with a variety of concerts and contests throughout 2012. Watch this space for information on where you can next see Dobcross Silver Band performing.

New conductor, new players and a new website … A new era at Dobcross begins!

After three successful years with the band including North West Area 3rd Section Champions, a ticket to the Nationals and great results throughout the years in all contests, Dobcross would like to wish all the best to Grenville Moore as he puts lip to mouthpiece once again.

We are now pleased to announce that the conducting vacancy has been filled by Kenny Pain. Kenny, former player of the Band of the Coldstream Guards and more recently Soprano Cornet at United Co-op Milnrow, says:

“The opportunity to conduct Dobcross is huge for me and I am thoroughly looking forward to working with the band, continuing the good work that Grenville has done over the years.”

Since Kenny’s appointment two weeks ago, there has been a staggering ten players that have signed up to the band. We would like to welcome the following members:

  • Richard Sutcliffe – Solo Horn
  • Kara Sutcliffe – 1st Horn
  • Jake Gordon – Principal Euphonium
  • Bradley Barnes – 2nd Euphonium
  • Keelan Sutcliffe – Percussion
  • Steph Coward – Assistant Principal Cornet
  • Alice Thompson – Solo Cornet
  • Hollie Sutcliffe – 3rd Cornet
  • Janet – 2nd Cornet
  • Elliot Waters- 2nd Cornet

With a full band once again, the Band is now looking forward to the Durham Miners Gala tomorrow (9/7/11), where we have been given the rare honor of playing in the Cathedral for the third time in five years.

Future Events include a Concert at the Uppermill Conservative Club next Sunday (17/7/11), Bolsover Entertainments Contest (11/9/11) and also a Night of Film Music at Shaw Playhouse (17/9/11). We hope to see you there!

Welcome to the new website!

Welcome to the new website of the Dobcross Silver Band!

This is just a test run to see how people like it as it so far.

Please note the site is still in the design stage and some parts are unfinished. I have not had chance to change certain aspects yet (like the banner at the top!). This is just an idea of how the website is going to look in terms of the layout.

Please comment on the Band’s Twitter page (found to the right) or the Band’s or my own (Dan Wilson) Facebook page. Any feedback will be gratefully received.

You can even start to use the site now by clicking on the “leave a reply” below.

Many thanks, Dan :-)
